Well, the WBC was at Comic-Con, as planned. And geekdom was ready for them.
My favorite counter-protester was "Buddy Jesus" from "Dogma".
The Phelps-a-Thon raised $1500, and much fun was poked at Phelps' movement.
Geeks. Are. AWESOME.
Ok, here's the deal.
There's this guy named Fred Phelps. In short, he's the guy from the Westboro Baptist Church who organizes the "God Hates Fags" protests at military/police funerals, high school dances, pride marches, and so on. He and his followers are hell-bent (pun intended) on spreading as much hate and vitriol as possible wherever they go.
Now they're protesting Comic-Con. Comic-Con.
BUT! There's a counter-movement known as the Phelps-A-Thon that raises money for LGBT equality for every minute that Phelps and his ilk protest. The Phelps-A-Thon's purpose is to turn this message of hate against itself.
I fully and vehemently support this movement and will be pledging money to counter the hatred that these people try to spread. Their pledge site for Comic-Con is here. They will also hold counter-protests for any other locations that the WBC will be "visiting", and will happily take requests if they're not already scheduled somewhere.
Boost the signal quickly, please (SDCC is the 22nd!) and consider donating. Even 50 cents a minute (WBC tends to only do 45-minute demonstrations) can make a huge difference.
My other hang-outs:
The Rorschach/Watchmen Kinkmeme
Rorschach emote by Smileydesign (Gomotes)
Stamps by picklelova, styrecat, Fedini, grau-gestreift, Jhas777, BuckNut, Cyberknife
Don't come to Northeast Tennessee and protest a soldier's funeral. We don't take too kindly to that and we all carry shotguns.
But I loved the comicon protest against them. It was awesome.
I'm waiting to see if they come to the Con I go to every year because it's taking place on easter this next coming April.
AND PROTESTING COMIC CON??? C'MON! @_@
I wuold donate, but I is broke... *weeps*
I have no money to donate(I'm 15 and have no job or money)but I'll post this in my journal.
Please don't get mad at me...
