Well, the WBC was at Comic-Con, as planned.  And geekdom was ready for them.

My favorite counter-protester was "Buddy Jesus" from "Dogma". :giggle:

The Phelps-a-Thon raised $1500, and much fun was poked at Phelps' movement.

Geeks.  Are.  AWESOME.  :#1:

(original post)

Ok, here's the deal.

There's this guy named Fred Phelps.  In short, he's the guy from the Westboro Baptist Church who organizes the "God Hates Fags" protests at military/police funerals, high school dances, pride marches, and so on.  He and his followers are hell-bent (pun intended) on spreading as much hate and vitriol as possible wherever they go.

Now they're protesting Comic-Con. Comic-Con.

BUT!  There's a counter-movement known as the Phelps-A-Thon that raises money for LGBT equality for every minute that Phelps and his ilk protest. The Phelps-A-Thon's purpose is to turn this message of hate against itself.

I fully and vehemently support this movement and will be pledging money to counter the hatred that these people try to spread. Their pledge site for Comic-Con is here.  They will also hold counter-protests for any other locations that the WBC will be "visiting", and will happily take requests if they're not already scheduled somewhere.

Boost the signal quickly, please (SDCC is the 22nd!) and consider donating.  Even 50 cents a minute (WBC tends to only do 45-minute demonstrations) can make a huge difference.

WBC came to protest a funeral in my area and wouldn't come out of their hotel because when they started to they saw a HUGE protest against them and The Rolling Thunder (A local christian but still intimidating looking motorcycle gang) and were too scared to come out of their room.

Don't come to Northeast Tennessee and protest a soldier's funeral. We don't take too kindly to that and we all carry shotguns.

But I loved the comicon protest against them. It was awesome.

I'm waiting to see if they come to the Con I go to every year because it's taking place on easter this next coming April.

Hahahahahaha, that is awesome. :lmao: I wish I could've been at Comic-Con, but I'll just have to settle for the news stories. *wistful sigh*

I want to go to Comic-Con too, but I'll take what I can get. Perhaps I'll get a lot of money and be able to go!

I was so happy to see all our fellow geeks out and standing strong in the face of asshattery. Buddy Christ makes an appearance every year at Dragon*Con so he made me smile extra big. Thanks for the link to Phelps-A-Thon. I had no idea such a thing existed!

Y'welcome - I can't remember where I first heard of it, but it's the best idea ever for a counter-protest. ;)

God does not hate fags. He hates sin, but wants nothing more than to see their souls saved. That guy is a douche bag.

That's all right - I definitely know how that is! From what I've been hearing, SDCC attendees did an excellent job of out-protesting the Phelps clan. I only wish I could've been there... *sigh*

*Sigh* I am so tired of these people. They consider themselves "christians" and they do the complete opposite of what the chruch considers right. They hate, they judge, they are unforgiving, and they are sick people.

I have no money to donate(I'm 15 and have no job or money)but I'll post this in my journal.

Westboro Baptist Church members are sick, sick people. In fact, it's more of a cult than a 'church' if anything. Have you seen the videos and interviews of them on youtube? My G-d! Insanity, thy name is Westboro Baptist Church.

Those people (the anti-gay protesters) make me sick! We are not specifically a Christian nation, Many of our ancestors came to America as a result of religious persecution and prejudice back in their homelands because America was founded on religious freedom. That's why my ancestors came, the German Protestants were seizing the lands of my Catholic ancestors and forbidding them to gather and worship. Thus, I feel they shouldn't be forcing their religious views of hatred on everybody else.

/end rant.

Please don't get mad at me...

Not mad at you, don't worry. :) What the WBC does makes me angry, but I do like the counter-protests that turn something so negative into a positive.

This guy is from a church. Oh I'm so embaressed. It's people like him that are giving people like me a bad name. But protesting ComiCon is just stupid. I'd donate, but I'm absolutely broke at the moment and lack a job. :P

You're right, he and people like him don't help things at all, only making rifts wider between people. :( It's ok if you can't donate, but I'd appreciate it if you could spread the word?
