I don't make New Year's resolutions.  I never was really into it, and in later years I decided it actually causes more harm than good, pressuring people into making unrealistic promises for end results rather than acknowledging that life is a continuum.

Not that people shouldn't have goals; quite the contrary, we should all strive to be better people.  Physical fitness, education, charity, hobbies, discipline - all excellent things.  The pitfall is that we promise ourselves to do any or all of these things "next year", with no real plan of action or consequences for failure.  "Next year" is 365 days long... as a deadline that's pretty ambiguous, and leaves all sorts of openings for procrastination and guilt.

Why not try doing "the right thing" today.  Now.  Whatever that "right thing" is, whether it's getting off one's ass to do laundry, or actually writing that check to that charity, or choosing not to supersize lunch that one time, or just holding the door for someone despite being in a hurry.  Frankly, if more people could do small-scale good every day rather than trying for the ever-unreachable Grand Gesture, I think the world in general would be in a lot better shape.
