(with thanks to bdunn1342 for bringing the idea 'round once again :) )

There was originally a number set for this, but I think I'm just going to set a time limit (I'll need it to prod me into completing it! :XD: )

Whoever responds to this entry by the end of the month will have a 3-piece feature in my journal.

In return, please consider doing a similar feature in your own journal to share the love.  :)

Time marches inexorably forward despite the spike-strips I keep throwing down behind me.  ;P  I did at least get a nice pick-me-up last week when FX broadcast V for Vendetta.  :boogie:

Now I'm trying to squeak a story in while I'm planning for three different birthdays and an icon festival on LiveJournal this month.  Ack.

Speaking of which... I confess to shameless pimping, but if you're a V for Vendetta fan and you like:

A) Fanfiction
B) Fan art
C) Discussion
D) Music
E) Anything else V-related

check out the community F for Fanfic.  You have to be 18 or older to see all the posts, but it's managed to remain one of the most active V-fandom sites out there.  It's where the writers who inspire a lot of my artwork hang out, and they can always use more love.  :aww:

Writing Resources

Since I just did an entry devoted to drawing resources, I figured it's only fair to devote one to writing as well.  :aww:

I'm an avid reader.  I positively devour pages and pages of text, sometimes reading an entire novel's worth of writing in a single day (much to the detriment of my housekeeping duties ;P )

Having said that, nothing makes reading a story more difficult than errors, whether they're in spelling or grammar.  I do try to keep in mind that many authors are not writing in their native language, and others are simply young and still learning.  I'm not about to poke fun at anyone for making a mistake!  However, errors do make one's work less likely to be enjoyed, or even read at all.

These sites won't answer all questions, but they should help with some, at least:

Proofreading for Common Errors - Includes commonly misused words (they're/their/there, affect/effect, etc.) and their definitions, along with more advanced help.

Common Errors in English - A comprehensive list of items/issues, arranged in a clickable alphabetical list.

Perfect Imagination - A page arranged by fandom for finding your own Beta-Reader.  Limited in fandoms, but several common ones are listed.

Happy Writing!  :)

Figure Drawing Resources

I don't know about you guys, but I'm forever casting about for pose references... especially when a certain masked someone and his lady have decided to test my abilities/patience. ;P

A lot of times I use comic books - the figures in them are already simplified, posed dramatically, and they have the added benefit of "romanticized" body proportions that look better to the human eye. The two comics I tend to use most are "V for Vendetta" (big surprise! ;)) drawn by David Lloyd and "1602", drawn by Andy Kubert.

In addition to these I do have other books, but I also like to use sources online in case I want to print something out and sketch directly onto an image.  Here are some of them:

Pose Maniacs - Japanese site, but English-speakers can still navigate it.  Has several thousand computer-generated poses that can be rotated as the artist needs.

Fantasy Art Resource Project
- A really basic introduction to figure drawing.  Starts with stick figures and gives good tips on conveying emotion through poses.

Neofox's  Drawing References & Resources - A journal entry by :iconneofox: with many good references for anatomical "problem" areas like hands and feet, as well as some nice drawing tutorials.

Human Anatomy for Artists - A large archive of pose photos.  Many body types and poses.  CAUTION: Not work-safe; has many nude poses.

I hope these were helpful - or at least entertaining!  :D

A Heartfelt 'Thank You'

My profile just passed 10K pageviews.

I know full well that pageviews aren't the end-all be-all, but there's still a marvelous feeling associated with knowing that one has been seen by someone else.  And I freely admit there is a certain degree of validation that occurs at the five-digit mark, regardless of whether it consists of new individuals or repeat visitors.

While I draw and write for the characters and their universe, it's undeniable that the true significance of it is in the sharing.  If I simply created in a vacuum, never interacting with others, my work wouldn't have the same meaning; it would just rattle around in its lonely little corner and eventually sit in silence.

The people who come and look at a picture or read a story are really the ones responsible for giving life to a creation.  It's not even about "liking" a piece or not - what's important is the interaction and response that occurs, both positive and negative alike.

My work exists because of me.  It lives because of all of you.

Thank you.

I've been trying to learn how to do invisible watermarks, with limited success.  I've found three different tutorials, each of them good, but each of them offering details the others didn't have.  It seems I can either have the watermark be not-so-invisible (bleah :bleh: ) or else I can have it not work at all, but I can't get anything in between.  :disbelief:

Worst case, I'll just generate a digital "signature" and be done with it.

But it is rather frustrating...

Still lots of ideas piling up, but I've at least got a bit of time to wrestle with them (and cajole them, and yell at them, and...).  I'm about to dive into a major project for F for Fanfic that I hope pans out.  It'll take me a while to get it going though, 'cos I've got several hundred files to sift through first.  >.<  Brain is still doing its best to make up for lost time, and I'm trying not to let it get me tensed up about getting things finished.

Traffic Jam of the Brain

Journal Entry: Sun Jul 20, 2008, 4:19 PM
I have dueling Muses in my head.  I really want to draw, and I've got about four different images at various stages, but nothing is settling.  Part of it is because I normally draw from stories, and nothing has really hit me upside the head at the moment.  :hmm:  The other reason is that the Writing Muse is tugging on my sleeve as well, but it can't figure out exactly what it wants to talk about.  I'll get a few sentences into something, and then the Muse spots something shiny and wanders off.  :disbelief:

Too much inspiration is often just as frustrating as not enough.

[Edit: Ok, once I got done whinging, I actually got a drawing to start solidifying - woot!  :boogie:  I just get frustrated when too much happens at once...]

V art features and I can has website!

Journal Entry: Sun Jul 13, 2008, 10:48 AM
I finally caved in and made a website for my stuff. www.geocities.com/fuguevstate/… :nerd:

DA is a wonderful place for my artwork, so that's not changing at all.  What's difficult is posting stories, because I can't easily indicate where a particular story falls in the timeline.

So... nothing precisely new, but hopefully those reading the stories (and I myself!) will have a better way of keeping track of things. ^^;

And now, to the features!

Hooray, I am home at last!  Back to a world of television, refrigerators, and carpeting.  :-D

I'm nearly done with the end of "Turning Point", and I need to pick up more black paper for drawing.

I'm already looking at two short-term jobs in the next week, and dealing with a number of home-based projects in addition to what the Muse wants.  I'm hoping I can use some of the "I'm home!" energy I've got to get a drawing or two done quickly - here's hoping, anyway!

Journal Entry: Fri Jun 27, 2008, 9:38 AM
Ay, me... We're in the home stretch at my summer job - ten days before I go back home, hooray!  But in the meantime, I'm in the middle of a thirteen-day work week... :faint:

At present the plot-bunnies have multiplied into five different things.  Two of them seem fairly write-able, so I'm tackling them as I can.  There are also at least two images lurking in my head, but I won't be able to properly free them until I get home.  :dohtwo:   It just goes to prove how stress-dependent my Muse is, I guess:  When I've got lots of time, it sits and sulks in the corner; when I'm up to my eyeballs in work, it wants to play right now.  :shakefist:

Meanwhile, I thought I'd share some artwork that has inspired me in various and sundry ways with my own work.  Enjoy!

Still here, in spite of the stillness in my corner!

The Muse has seen fit to set about two-and-a-half plot bunnies after me, and I'm futzing with another chibi doodle and possibly another sketch.  As expected, however, I don't get much time to sit down and concentrate on anything - it's anyone's guess when I'll A)finish something and B)be able to scan it if it's a drawing.  Only four more weeks to go, and then I return home... at which point I won't have any excuse for not posting!  :XD:

Next week I'll be going to a 6-week-long summer job out-of-state.  I won't be completely out of the loop (hopefully! :fingerscrossed:) but I doubt I'll have access to a scanner.

If I write anything during that time, I'll definitely post it.  I'll at least have my sketchbook, so perhaps the Muse will throw something at me amidst the 13-hour workdays that will be coming up...

In case I don't get to post here for a while, I'll do my best to stay on top of messages and I look forward to returning!

Why keywords are IMPORTANT.

Journal Entry: Tue May 13, 2008, 9:07 AM
I found a thief the other day.

She was posting others' work as her own in her Gallery.  Granted, she wasn't precisely saying that these were her own works - her Artist Comments consisted of things like "Beautiful!" and "I love this!", which led me to believe (initially, at least) that she had just misunderstood the whole concept of Favourites.

The only reason I found her at all is that I have a default search of "Newest V for Vendetta Art" on my login page.  I spotted "her" new work there, but recognized it as one I'd seen before.  Sure enough, after a bit of searching I found the original work that had been posted 2 years ago.

After going to this person's gallery, I found several works of art that also belonged to other people.  (Honestly, I figured she was appropriating others' work just because the variety of media and styles in her gallery looked too extensive to be just one person's work.)

I decided to be polite and send her a private note, detailing my observations and including the points that:

A) Only one's own work goes in one's Gallery - posting others' work, even if intended as flattery, looks like theft.  And,

B) I hadn't said anything to the other artists yet because I was assuming she had made an innocent "newbie" mistake. (Her account is rather new.)  This last point, frankly, was a veiled threat.  I didn't really think she was innocent - I was just being polite and giving her the chance to do the right thing.

Anyway.  I didn't receive a response from her, but upon checking her gallery I noticed it was significantly smaller.  Hooray for that.  Unfortunately, there are still works in her gallery that are obviously not hers.   My problem is, I can't (yet) figure out whose they are.

I am currently searching for these works by looking for keywords, because this user has changed the titles from the originals (a definite suggestion of theft as opposed to mere flattery.)  I haven't yet met with success, but I'm not giving up.

I'm not going to name this person, because flame wars are not helpful.  I'm doing what I can to gather evidence, and if I do find the original owners of the works in question, I'll notify the proper individuals.  If I can't track down any more artwork, though, then she's going to get away with her petty little self-aggrandizement.

The moral of this story is this:  Use keywords.  Lots of them.  Good, descriptive words that let your work be found if a title has been changed.  SIGN YOUR WORKS AND/OR USE WATERMARKS.  They make theft more difficult (though not impossible.)

I myself am guilty of not using watermarks everywhere.  I'm in the process of correcting that.

At any rate, I felt this was an important enough issue to share.

Now - on with more features (with credit!</i> ;) )

Calling NO TAGBACKS on this meme!!!   :XD:

Once again here are the rules:
1. Post these rules
2. Each person tagged must post 10 random (hopefully interesting) facts about themselves
3. Tags should write a blogpost of these facts
4. At the end of the post 8 more bloggers are tagged and named
5. Go to their blog and leave a comment telling them they're tagged
don't feel like it, can't make me, nyah...

Ten?!?  Good lord, I'm not that interesting.

1.  I have lived in five different states throughout my life.

2.  I used to drive my parents nuts by chewing on aluminum foil when I was little.
