(O|O) (O|O) (O|O) (O|O) (O|O) (O|O) (O|O) (O|O) (O|O)

I sincerely hope that this isn't a widespread problem, but I fear that it is.  Anyone attending a convention, and particularly any cosplayers, should read this and boost the signal as much as possible.

As a fan, as someone who has attended conventions, as a cosplayer, and as someone who has worked in the hotel industry, I can only add my own YES THIS OMFG to the thoughts below.

(original source: flyingcatnall on Tumblr)

Please, don't make fandom look bad.

I never post on Tumblr, so I'm hoping my few followers can help me get this word out by reblogging…

I work for a hotel that hosts a major US con every year. I love anime and I go to cons myself, but I am going to be blunt about some of the problems we have and how we deal with them. I don't know why people lose common sense when attending cons. I realize that most con-goers are young, and probably haven't traveled alone before. They're also really excited to go to a con and to see people they've only chatted with on line.

But…things have gotten out of hand.

So, please…read this list of Bad Behaviors that I've seen over the past three years and please…don't do them!

1. Completely Trashing Rooms. I have part of the team that has to take pictures of the damages left behind after a con. We will bill you. Sometimes, we won't even tell you. We'll just charge it on your credit or debit card. Again, the tiny print in the contract allows us to do this. We take pictures in case you try and dispute the charge with the credit card.

2. Being a Homeless Congoer. These are the people who don't have a room but figure they can sleep in the lobby, stairwell, hallways, whatever. We're on to you. We will remove you from the premises. If you are underage, we will still call the police.

3. Being Unable to Pay for Your Room or Food. These are the people who usually make arrangements for rooms with online friends. One friend books the room on a credit card, but when it comes time to settle the bill and the so-called friends are asked to pay their share in cash or come up their own credit card to split…there's suddenly no money. I feel bad for the person who booked the room, and I'm sorry that you're not going to make rent, or that your mom is sick, or that you're a poor college student or whatever. Please don't stand in the lobby and cry or try to offer me "free art commissions" or the horns off your Homestuck costume. My hotel does not accept those as payment.

4. Having Noise Complaints Lodged Against You. So, that little gathering you decided to have in your room is getting pretty loud and despite two phone calls from the desk asking you to quiet down, you refuse to do so. Guess what, the hotel management is throwing you out. We'll have our security guards tell you and then the police will escort you from the premises. No, you will not get a refund. No, we don't care you have nowhere to go. Maybe those two phone calls should've clued you into the problems you were causing.

5. Acting Like You Own the Hotel. These are the people who think that since they paid X dollars for their con badge and Y dollars for the room they are entitled to do whatever and whenever they want. Here are some of the most ridiculous (and this is by far not an inclusive list):

   a. Taking their clothes off and running down the hall
   b. Wearing full Homestuck body paint and jumping in the pool and hot tubs.
   c. Screaming "KAWAII!" at random people
   d. Camping out in the hotel restaurant and not ordering anything
   e. Running through a wedding reception in different a ballroom while shouting "HETALIA!!!"
   f. Smashing a brand new TV in one of the rooms
   g. Sex in the lobby. While in cosplay.
   h. Setting up an "art table" in the middle of the lobby. (She didn't get an artist alley table and was mad about it…
   i. Pulling the fire alarm at 3AM and forcing an evacuation (This person was prosecuted. We caught them on tape)
   k. A cosplay-photo shoot that went out of control with photographers physically fighting with each other…in the lobby.

One more note: Our manager is really upset about the amount of clean-up required after the Homestuck cosplayers we had last year. Bathrooms and bathtubs were covered in gray body paint, and the pool and hot tubs had to be drained and cleaned because some of them thought that would be a quick way to get it off. Manager is thinking of putting in the contract with the con that they have to ban Homestuck cosplay to prevent this in the future.

So, as a Homestuck, I beg you! Please, please, don't do this! Clean up after yourself!

Also, adding helpful hints from slipstreamborne on Tumblr:

As someone who's worn plenty of body-paint intensive costumes, I highly advise bringing your own washrags to use (or better yet, a bunch of makeup remover cleansing towlettes, Neutragena brand works great) instead of ruining the hotel towels scrubbing your makeup off.  Also pack a bunch of paper towels and maybe a small spritzer of mufti-surface cleanser (obviously don't spray it on anything it's not designed for) in your con kit and wipe down any surfaces you get makeup on while they're still wet and bundle up the wet paper towels in trashbags so it's easier for you or housekeeping to dispose of them.  You don't want to make somebody's workday extra long and frustrating because they have to scrub off rings of body paint in dozens of bathrooms (yours included), and if you do leave a mess that you don't know how to clean up at least try and tip housekeeping for their troubles.

Also if you've got paint on your legs or arms on top of sealing its a good idea to go ahead and carry around a beach towel or some trash bags (easily wadded up into pockets and handbags) that you can lay out on any furniture before sitting down.  You don't want to be That Person at the con.

:iconahkahna: has posted about an eBay seller using dA members' art illegally:

:thumb340505642:

HERE'S WHAT YOU CAN DO:

1.  If you need to report an entire store or user, the only way to do it is to call their 866 number. Use this link ([link]), and click on the "CALL US" button for a one-time reference code.  The user's name is "gotrendyhome", and their store is "trendyhomedecodotcom".

Try asking for "Grace", or "Ray" (her supervisor) if you do it. ("Grace" is who I talked to.) If they're going to make it difficult to do the right thing, then I think it's perfectly reasonable to ensure "quality" service by referring the problem to the same person(s).  If you speak to someone else, be sure to get their name and supervisor's name, and pass it along.

2.  You can find out if an image is stolen by copying the image URL of the eBay item and doing a Google Image Search.  If it shows up on another website, then it's a stolen piece.

What really gets me about this seller is they've got the brass cojones to declare copyright on their items, as well as touting "100% Honesty".

Makes me want to wish terrible things upon them.  :chainsaw:

A general FYI as a placeholder until I post something more meaningful...

1. I don't mind "Thank-you" notes for :+fav:s, llamas, comments, etc.  While it occasionally results in a large pile in my inbox, I would rather have confirmation that there are still people on the planet who believe in good manners and make an effort to practice them. :)

2. Having said that, I understand if someone else doesn't want to see "Thank-you" notes for faves or whatnot, and I do try to pay attention when I visit others' profiles to thank them for things.  If I catch your notice that you don't want to be thanked, I do respect it.

3. Having said that, I will occasionally miss such a posting if you clutter your profile with ginormous screencaps and acres of stamps.  Please keep in mind that if there's something you want me to see on your profile, you must prioritize and compose accordingly.

Happily, Lucy made it through all right thanks to :iconbumble-boo:'s generous friends.  Now she would like to pay them back, and so she's been asking folks to have a look at her Etsy page to help her raise that money:

Please take a moment to check out her shop - there are all sorts of wonderful (and affordable!) things there, and even if it weren't for Lucy's story I would highly recommend having a look, because there's always something there to make one smile.

I don't make New Year's resolutions.  I never was really into it, and in later years I decided it actually causes more harm than good, pressuring people into making unrealistic promises for end results rather than acknowledging that life is a continuum.

Not that people shouldn't have goals; quite the contrary, we should all strive to be better people.  Physical fitness, education, charity, hobbies, discipline - all excellent things.  The pitfall is that we promise ourselves to do any or all of these things "next year", with no real plan of action or consequences for failure.  "Next year" is 365 days long... as a deadline that's pretty ambiguous, and leaves all sorts of openings for procrastination and guilt.

Why not try doing "the right thing" today.  Now.  Whatever that "right thing" is, whether it's getting off one's ass to do laundry, or actually writing that check to that charity, or choosing not to supersize lunch that one time, or just holding the door for someone despite being in a hurry.  Frankly, if more people could do small-scale good every day rather than trying for the ever-unreachable Grand Gesture, I think the world in general would be in a lot better shape.

Protecting the Internet against PIPA and SOPA

This is something everyone here (even those not in the US) should already know about.  Here is an opportunity to add your voice to the opposition.  And in the meantime, because I'm cynical that way, I'd advise making as many backups of data as possible.

From the website Stop Censorship:

"The Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) and the PROTECT IP Act (PIPA) would ruin so much of what's best about the Internet: They will give the government and corporations new powers to block Americans' access to sites that are accused of copyright infringement, force sites like YouTube to go to new lengths to police users' contributions, and put people in prison for streaming certain content online.

There's a good chance this legislation will pass – but Senator Ron Wyden is a steadfast opponent, and he says he'll try to block it by filibustering if it comes up for a vote.

Sometimes filibusters last hours – or days – leaving Senators reading out of the dictionary or cookbooks to pass the time. But we've got a better idea:

Millions of Americans support Internet freedom. What better way to demonstrate our strength than to ask Senator Wyden to read our names into the record during his filibuster? He's agreed to read censorship opponents' names from the floor of the Senate, and to try to enter the rest into the Congressional Record.

Just fill out the form to stand with Wyden and ask him to read your name on the floor of the Senate. It will also generate a letter to your own lawmakers, asking them to oppose Internet censorship."

So, it's coming up on the holiday season already.  x-/  Tons to do in the way of winterizing the home, and getting greeting cards ready, and gift shopping already omg...   Thankfully, I've had tons of opportunities to do creative things for Halloween and even events at work these past several months, and I've also managed the occasional sketch or fic in fandom so I haven't had to completely set that sort of thing aside.   In fact, I've wound up doing so many creative things that I've caught myself more than once procrastinating doing something creative by doing housework.  <--- *is a dork*  :XD:

I have one more sketch card to do for my "Watchmen" series, and I still have to go back and fix the Rorschach piece I've got in scraps.  There's a fic I want to finish that's been in progress for over a year and is over 100 pages long(!), and there are any number of craft projects I'm either planning or in the middle of.  I've got a fic bingo card that I haven't even begun to work on event though I've had it for months already, and I'm going to sign on for the Watchmen Secret Santa again this year.  :dizzy:

Definitely a crazy schedule I'm setting up for myself but it's creative, and stimulating, and it gives me all kinds of reasons to turn off the television, which I always think is a good idea.  ;D

Trying to decide if this qualifies as a "News" post rather than just a journal.  Meanwhile -

In the US, there will be a vote on Wednesday 26 Oct. regarding a bill that will ostensibly "protect" owners of intellectual property online, but because it's details are too broad and hastily-written it will actually make it possible for entire domains to be censored - or it will encourage them to self-censor.  Sites like YouTube, Tumblr... basically any site that hosts content uploaded by users (even this one, kids) would be affected.  As would search engines, as they would be required to eliminate links leading to "infringing" sites.

The full text of the "Protect IP Act", as it's being called, can be found here:  www.techdirt.com/articles/2011…

I've been trying to take in more artwork around dA from time to time, to see what there is to see.  (I watch people and groups, granted, but that can be simultaneously limiting and overwhelming, depending on the interest and rate of posting.)  At the moment, my favored method is to pick a keyword that sounds interesting and check out the "Most Recent" entries that result, as opposed to "Most Popular" (They don't need any help being seen, in my opinion! ;) )   I've been leaving llamas where I go, partially to get attention, I admit it, but also for the simple reason that I'm amused at the thought of wandering through an enormous art gallery trailing llamas wherever I go.  :XD:  It's been a fun way to see new people. :)

TinEye, Google Images, and detecting art theft

I've long wished for the ability to find an image online based upon the actual image rather than a verbal description, ever since I first started seeing friends' journals talking about art theft.  Now it seems technology is catching up a bit.

The first program/page I saw a while back was Tineye ( www.tineye.com/ ).  It's still under development, but it searches for instances a particular images is found online - including crops, recolors, etc.

Google Images also lets you find pictures based upon actual images now, if you enter the URL of a specific file.  It's kind of interesting in that it goes on to look for "similar" works and shows them as well.

In either case, I'm curious as to how effective these tools really are in finding unauthorized use of artwork.  It seems like either one could be helpful, depending on the circumstances.  TinEye is still archiving, and it seems to be a slow process ("slow" being a relative term, considering how many trillions-or-more images there are out there, to say nothing of the terabytes of information!)  It's possible to register collections of images as a means of establishing ownership, which sounds interesting and yet flawed.  What little I saw on their site assures that the submissions remain the property of the person/company submitting them and not TinEye, but one wonders how they establish ownership beyond the registrant's say-so.  :-/    Google Images may or may not have the same shortcomings; I've no idea.

So far (*knocks on wood*)  I haven't seen any of my own stuff anywhere it shouldn't be, though I admit I haven't done a thorough search through everything I have.

Is there anyone out there whose work has been stolen who has tried using either of these search tools?  I'm very curious to know just how well they work (or not).

To combine or not to combine

I actually have three accounts here on dA, but I neglect two of them horribly.  One is for photos I've taken during our travels that I thought were neat enough to share.  The other was intended to be a showcase for :icongaliowhoop:'s and my Etsy store.

I check in to this account every day almost without fail.  The others... maybe once every several months. OTL   It's especially bad where the Etsy account is concerned, because that's one that could theoretically be bringing in a bit of money if I were actually taking care of it.     Also, this account is a paid one, while the other two are freebies.  I think that's part of the reason I neglect them; I get spoiled with the interface on this one.

Combining everything into one account would definitely make it easier to track everything, although it would be deliberately blending my fandoms with RL.  I've managed to avoid that for several years, and I don't know that I'd want to change that.   There's stuff I've drawn and written that I'm not sure our Steampunk clientele would want/need to see, and I don't know that my Fandom-based watchers would be interested in photos of waterfalls.  xD

*sigh*   I think I just need to get better about logging in to our other accounts and just take care of them, already.  At least for now, anyway.   Much as I'd like to think I can just throw them together into one pile, I'm not sure the separate audiences for each element would blend into the other areas at all well.  :-/
