Rorschach costume in progress by FugueState Rorschach costume in progress by FugueState
Just a quick mock-up on a dummy to see how everything's going together. Thanks to dramatic lighting, you can't see much of the (extensive) detail work that's yet to be done. ;P

woah, very cool - may have to steal that when it's done =D

Is the mask see-through?

Thanks! ^_^

Yes it is - it's actually 3 layers(!) The first and third layers are a mesh-type dance fabric. Layer 1 is black, all one piece to help conceal the wearer's features. Layer 2 is a cannibalized cashmere knit from a stretchy top I found at a thrift store :XD:. It has eyeholes cut into it, and has the pattern painted on with a fabric marker. Layer 3 is white, one piece to conceal Layer 2's eyeholes, with the same pattern painted on it.

To keep the layers from crowding my eyes too much, I've got a rigid domino-style mask under all the layers. The end result is only slightly impaired vision! :D

Oh wow! That outfit is amazing and looks so great so far! I especially love the trench coat; where ever did you get it? :O

Be sure to post more pictures later please, if you don't mind of course. :)

Thank you! :aww:

The trench coat is a canvas one from a "Savers" store here in town. It didn't have the mantle like Rorschach's coat does, but all the other details and the fit were right.

I ended up Frankenstein-ing a mantle for it out of another trench coat that I'd found before this one, and then painting the whole thing with a combination of craft acrylics and gloss Mod-Podge to imitate a leather texture.

For the sprung epaulet, I borrowed a cosplayer's shared wisdom and inserted a wire into the fabric to make it hold its shape. :)

I'll definitely post more pics as things progress, and with luck I'll have something to show from Halloween itself!

Oh, okay! :XD: I just randomly bought mine from a Goodwill store, and it had MOST of the characteristics of Rorschach's coat.... except maybe the color to be darker, and for more of a leather texture...

Wow- you're brillant! :XD: I would have NEVER thought of doing any of those things! Do you cosplay or have you? :XD:

No, but my background is in theater (paint & props for the most part). I'd love to cosplay as Rorschach someday soon - 'til then my costume will wait patiently in the storage bin I got for it. xD

Ah, okay! :XD:
It'd really fun cosplaying as Rorschach because surprisingly enough, alot of people can recognize him! It's great! Alot of people want to take your picture and hug you and stuff. ^^

Are there any cons around where you live at all?

Not any good cons nearby, really. There might be some in Chicago, but I'm still figuring out where Watchmen cosplay works and where it doesn't. It seems like most conventions I see are for anime, which is a different animal altogether!

I did have a lot of fun on Halloween; tons of people recognized me. I had one guy come rushing up to me at random saying, "I f***ing love you!!" and one (fairly drunk) group of girls try to flirt with me. :XD:

I'm hoping that next year I can find a con that's either nearby or near family so I can incorporate it into a visit (provided I can get the time off work and $$$ to travel). Here's hoping, anyway! :fingerscrossed:
