First thing I noticed, obviously ... that you can't tell which, if any, are V. Which essentially puts you into Evey's disadvantage/dilemma/whatever.
Second thing I noticed ... her raised hand, tilt of her head ... she's crying. (Which is exactly correct, but affects me, obviously.)

Next thing ... the shine on all of the V wigs ... for some reason that really drives home to me how "identical" the V's all are in appearance.

And the fact that the world around Evey, around her and the podium, is just this big void ... gosh ... um ... the void she's feeling ... also her status as 'lost at sea' in front of that 'sea of masks', especially when she doesn't know that he really *is* there. I mean, she's really alone up there -- you can literally see it.

At some point, I'll probably be writing this incident more explicitly too. It was mentioned briefly in The One She Chose, then was the whole issue to resolve in Even From Behind the Mask. Might be an eve of the fifth story ... I mean it obviously matches the criteria. Man that's gonna hurt.

yeah... I ended up keeping a lot of the negative space around Evey rather than cropping the image down, precisely because the feeling I got from this moment was so much of her isolation.

It's interesing that the detail on the wigs struck you that way... I hadn't really thought about it, but the "V"s didn't start getting eerie until I had their hair drawn.

That'll be good, IMO. It's obviously a hard moment for them, but it's also one of those Really Important ones.

It shows. It does. The emptiness around her is overwhelming. You want to save her from it. And the fact that she's crying too, just makes it worse.

Yeah, it's the hair. Part of the shine, I assume, is because it's a wig. So it jumps out at people. And when it jumps out from *all* of those V's, it's just an unnerving reminder that it's so many people under the same facade ... and not only does *she* not realize that the man she loves is under one of those wigs, but even we, who know, can't pick him out.

It's like a really macabre shell game.

Oh I agree.
I remember very vividly, last October, while working on Even From Behind the Mask, for the eve of the fifth, I was in the left hand turning lane at a local intersection, on my way to pick daughter up from nursery school. Evey tried writing the speech in my head, and I started crying. Cried all the way into the church to get daughter. It was not enjoyable. I think 'she' thought at first that she'd do it for that November. Didn't work ... she fell over and I was left crying.

Reading over Pearls comments I think she has covered most of what I wanted to say about this piece But I can tell you that I can really feel Evey's pain and loneliness Poor girl not knowing or more thinking he is gone forever.
